“Alicia, I stand before you today, and I see the whole world in front of me.” – the groom
When a film opens with vows as romantic as Alicia and Alex’s, you know it’s a good ideas to just go ahead and grab the tissues. Then you catch a glimpse of the groom rocking out on his guitar less than a minute into the film, and you can imagine that this couple had some real jams at their wedding. From classic oldies to Portuguese music, the bride and groom hand-picked every song that played from ceremony to reception. We only wish we could have been there to witness the original song this serenaded his bride with! Watch Alicia and Alex’s wedding by Tree of Life Films & Photography, then read below to find out more about this musically gifted duo.
As I was preparing to move my life out to Colorado from NY, Alex (my boss at a little Belgium Restaurant on Long Island), asked me out on a date. I already had a crush on him so I figured what the heck why not! Even though I had plans to move out west, I felt like I had to go on this date. Long story short, I never moved and we have been together for 7.5 years now. We met in 2010, were engaged in 2013 and married on May 31, 2014. We now own a house on Long Island with three crazy pets.
Tell us about the music at your wedding – what song did Alex serenade you with during the reception?!
We hand picked every song at our wedding. From the 80s, 90s, minimal top 40 songs, classic oldies, to Portuguese music! Our bridal party walked down the aisle to the Beatles (Here, There, Everywhere), Alex and I walked back down the aisle to the Talking Heads (This Must Be the Place). Our first dance was to My Morning Jacket (Thank You Too!). We were introduced at the reception to LCD Soundsystem (Dance Yourself Clean). The Father Daughter Dance was to The Beach Boys (Gold Only Knows) and the Mother Son Dance was to a classic Portuguese Fado song. Alex is a musician so he actually wrote the song he serenaded me to! It was absolutely beautiful. And my brother also DJed a little for the after party. It was quite the evening!
What was the most unexpected thing about your wedding day?
The most unexpected thing about our wedding was how stress free the whole day was. There was never a moment where we felt overwhelmed. A lot of people say that the whole day is a blur but we remember everything crystal clear. And everything was absolutely perfect. There were a few hiccups but it didn’t even matter. It is so important to let the little things go and enjoy what the day is truly about.
What was your favorite part of your wedding journey?
I loved all the planning! To me it was exciting. There were moments of stress, of course, but with all of our Vendors we felt at ease. We had such a great team and an amazing family to help along the way.
What’s your #1 piece of advice for future brides?
My advice for future brides is to not freak out over every little detail. This day is about making a commitment to your partner, which is pretty special. I am not just talking about the planning but also the day of. Take it all in and have fun!
